Oh what a good subject for a research paper! Such a fascinating woman. If you find a used copy in a bookstore, buy The Collected Stories of Collette. Its a 3” thick volume but the stories are very short—and so bewitching! As for your upcoming borrows, terrific! I quite enjoy Cheri. Despite the minor flaws with the storytelling, I find Carol Drinkwater’s Olive Series highly addictive. I’m currently re-reading book two, the Olive Season.
I look forward to these posts, because I find books to add to my own list. I love Depeche Mode and have seen them in concert numerous times. Didn’t know there was a biography out there so now will be going down that rabbit hole joyously with you. Their music spoke to me and one of the best teen memories was going to a concert with a friend and being six rows from the stage witnessing greatness that is Dave Gahan, and quieter genius of Martin Gore, Andy Fletcher and Alan Wilder. Back in the day I collected tapes and made mixes - thanks for bringing me down a memory lane.
I love this! There is a lot to discover about “the lads.” The biography will mean a lot more to you than it did to me because you already know how the music made you feel at those moments in your life. I envy your concert experience. I have to say, seeing them in a concert hall in Germany in the early 1990s had to be a trip! Thanks for sharing your book thoughts with me and following my musings.
Such a terrific - and varied! - collection of fine writing here! No one can match Fitzgerald’s incisive observations of upper class ennui. I loved seeing Carol Drinkwater on your list! I enjoy her Olive series books chiefly as an escape. I find that her writing can be overwrought, but somehow that is part of the fun in reading her South of France stories. Romeo and Juliet?! It’s been decades! But you inspired me to revisit it. Thanks as always for your insights and inspiration!
